The History of Silent Spring
In 1958, a former marine biologist named Rachel Carson set out to warn the world of the disastrous environmental and physiological consequences of indiscriminate pesticide use. Four years later, against a backdrop of indignation from the chemical industry, she published “Silent Spring” - one of the most influential books of the 20th century.
Silent Spring awakened a new public awareness that nature was vulnerable to human intervention. It clearly demonstrated that pesticides are directly linked to the collapse of global biodiversity, leading to the banning of DDT and the establishment of the US Environmental Protection Agency.
And yet, sixty years later, many of Carson’s warnings are still unheeded. In the words of a recent IPBES study, “biodiversity is in a continuous, strong decline; 42% of terrestrial animal and plant species have declined in population size in the last decade.” The reliance on pesticides, herbicides and fungicides within industrial agriculture plays a key role in this downward spiral.

The Silent Spring Project
At Black Isle, looking after the environment has been at the heart of what we do for 24 years. On our 130 acre organic farm, we have created new ponds, wetlands and woodland habitats, planting over 7000 trees and giving nature space to thrive alongside our biodynamic market garden and flock of Hebridean sheep. We’ve looked after our soil health by sowing clover to fix nitrogen out of the atmosphere and our livestock provide the fields with plenty of manure - nature’s finest fertiliser.
Having created this oasis in an intensively farmed landscape, we wanted to do more to share our story and encourage others to take the same path.
To mark the 60th anniversary of Silent Spring, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees, to produce our new Silent Spring Organic Pale Ale. Ecosia are currently engaged in more than 60 projects across 32 countries, partnering with local communities to restore and protect biodiversity whilst providing a sustainable future for all. Established in 2009, they have planted a staggering 146 million trees…and counting.
Half of all the profits from our delicious, unfiltered Silent Spring Organic Pale Ale will go to Ecosia’s biodiversity projects across the globe. It’s available online, in our brewery shop and bars.
