Our hostel doors opened in the summer of 2018, with 10 mixed dorm rooms that are perfect for groups and travellers visiting the Highlands. Whilst you might be in the heart of Inverness city, our goal is to bring a taste of farm and brewery life to your stay.

To help us do that, we’re in search of artists to apply for our hostel mural project!

This is a commissioned project, which involves designing and creating a mural within the hostel stairwell, where currently it’s a little bare.

The selected artist will receive £1500 to complete their design, as well as on-site accommodation.

Paint, brushes and materials will also be supplied.

The Commissioned Project

We’d like the mural to tell the unique story of Black Isle.

From our own organic barley that we grow for beer, to the Hebridean sheep, horses and house cow we have on our farm, our processes are all interconnected. The mash from the tun feeds the sheep and our seasonal herbs and vegetables we grow are used to make delicious salads and pizzas at our bar.

For this reason, we’d like each wall to represent one of the five aspects of life at Black Isle.

The Brewery

This is the heart of our business and where we brew our delicious beers throughout the year. We offer tours and tastings, as well as a shop for visitors making a trip to see us in person.

Our Farm

On our farm we have a flock of Hebridean sheep, grow organic barley for the brewery and have our house Jersey cow, Celeste. It’s here we also host our annual Jocktoberfest beer and music festival!

Our Garden

In our brewery garden and poly tunnel we grow vegetables for the bar, as well provide a home to numerous bee hives. Our sister business, Black Isle Garden Design, grow plants and have a formal garden open to the public at certain times of the year.

Black Isle Hostel

The hostel is located in the city centre, with 10 mixed dorm rooms that are perfect for travellers and groups coming to the Highlands. Inside, it offers a taste of life at Black Isle.

Black Isle Bar

Situated in Inverness, this is the only dedicated craft beer bar in town. With over 100 beers from around the world as well as our own beer, we have private rooms and a secret rooftop bar and garden too.

The Outcome

To  design five simple murals, one for each wall on the stairwell leading from the entrance, to the hostel reception space. As you can see from the photos, there are five differing stripes of colour, each one representing a different aspect of Black Isle – the farm, the brewery, the hostel, the gardens and the bar. These background stripes of muted colours represent five key characteristics – grass, straw, hops, beer and leaves.

We’d ask that the design flows from one section of colour to the next; to convey the connection between them all.

The designs should be simple and loose, they needn’t be complicated or intricate.

We welcome dogs into the bar and hostel and have many of our own, so we’d like one of five brewery dogs to appear on each wall.

The background of the walls have already been prepared, so your designs will be painted on top of these stripes of colour.

You will be limited to using three colours – deep grey, indigo and mulberry.

You can mix white into these to create different tones, creating perspective.

The paint and brushes will be supplied to you.

Below are the dimensions you’ll need to work within. Wall sizes are measured from the front door and run up the left hand side of the entrance and staircase.  All sizes are from bottom left wall in ascending order, moving upstairs.
